CHAPTER TEN

Dawson swerved around the pallets, sprinting now, gun in both hands in front of her. It was dark, and she could barely make out anything in front of her. Her heart had begun to beat too fast and out of rhythm, and it seemed to her that her breath was the loudest thing in the entire universe.

Movement.

Something streaking towards her.

Dawson skidded to a stop, tightening her grip on her gun, sucking in three noisy breaths in quick succession.

It was a person. The person had a gun, and the person fired.

Dawson hit the floor, sweeping her leg out behind her as she did so. Her leg collided with Liam’s shins, and he went down too, grunting.

Dawson’s shoulder made impact with the cold concrete floor, and it hurt.

But she ignored that, lifting the gun and leveling it. She squeezed off a shot at the person coming for them. Now, she could see it was a woman—her hair in a sloppy braid that swung behind her as she ran for them.

Dawson’s gun shot cracked through the air.

The woman halted mid-movement, hit by the bullet. She swung her arm around wildly, getting off another shot before she crumpled to the ground.

Dawson cringed, but she was all right. She turned to Liam, whose eyes were wide and whose breathing was noisy too. “Hurt?” she gasped.

He shook his head.

Dawson turned back to the crumpled form of the woman on the floor. She waited for movement. She’d taken the woman down, but the woman had still been able to shoot. Dawson needed to get the gun from that woman.

She began to crawl across the floor.

From the left, Brice appeared.

“Stay there!” Dawson called to her, not wanting the woman to shoot again.

Brice halted.

The downed woman didn’t stir at the noise.

Dawson hesitated. “Drop your weapon,” she ordered.

Nothing from the motionless form on the floor.

Dawson pushed herself to her feet. Slowly, she moved across the room, covering the downed woman with her gun the entire time.

No movement.

Nothing.

She stepped over the woman, aiming her gun at the woman’s throat.

The woman’s eyes were wide open. Her face was dirty. There was blood. Dawson couldn’t see the gun.

She began to kneel to look for it.

The woman’s arm shot up, flinging the barrel of her weapon into Dawson’s face.

Dawson had her gun on the woman as well. She should have shot already, shot again, but now she had to weigh whether or not the woman could get her shot off first. And would Dawson be able to incapacitate the woman before she hurt others?

Dawson bared her teeth. “Drop it,” she growled.

The woman let out a high-pitched laugh, and Dawson knew she was the source of the laughter before. It was the same laugh.

“The highest form of love is sacrifice,” said the woman. “The highest form of success is sacrifice. I will be one with the all-seeing eye.” Then, too quick, she turned the gun on herself, fitting the barrel of the gun beneath her chin. The gunshot was loud, and her head jerked back, and blood sprayed out behind her unraveling braid.
